Wood packaging material – ISPM 15 requirements

Wood packaging material for transport of goods of all kinds, and wood used to wedge or support the transported cargo (collectively, wood) is a proven source of introduction and spread of a number of dangerous pests and diseases of plants. The International Plant Protection Convention was adopted by the FAO Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 - standard ISPM 15.

Since 1st March 2005 requiring Member States of the European Communities meet phytosanitary requirements for importation of wood packaging originating in third countries with the exception of Switzerland, in accordance with the standard ISPM 15. These requirements are set out in Decree No. 215/2008 Coll., On measures against the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products (Annex 4, Part A, Section I, paragraphs 2 and 8). All wood packaging material in the form of packing cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings, pallets, box pallets and other load boards, pallet collars, used to transport items of all kinds, and wood used to wedge or support the costs (piling stick wood), except raw wood of a thickness of 6 mm or smaller timber and processed using glue, heat and pressure, or a combination thereof, shall be treated and marked according to ISPM Standard 15. Piling stick timber may be temporarily 31st December 2007 treated and marked, if made of wood, which is free from bark, pests and symptoms of harmful organisms.

Information for importers of wooden items - piling stickers

From 1st January 2008 pay new phytosanitary requirements Stickers, which are imported in shipments of other goods. Stickers imported into the EU must be from 1st January 2008 treated and marked in accordance with the international standard ISPM 15. Obligation to treatment and thus will apply to all imported wood packaging material.
